Painted Sketches

I stopped painting traditionally for a long time, mostly because the pay check called for it more than anything else. I always loved the act of painting.  I tried doing other things, but it never really left my mind.
In the meantime, I started working for MTG and that involved having to do card alters at events and such. It inspired me to break my paints back out.

Moving from small, to big, and then back to small. lt felt good to move paint again.
I moved to small canvases and then popped out one big one that had been swimming around in my subconscious for a while.

I was working in acrylics and struggling to keep the paint wet and consistent. I got fed up and went out for a big paint sale and got some oils (thanks to Aaron Miller for his http://oilcolorpalettes.blogspot.com/ for helping me choose the paints).

I took it slow and didn’t commit myself too much to what I was doing, but I had been thinking about it for a while.

Spectrum 19

It always interests me what gets into the annual Spectrum and what doesn't. Every year, I send in multiple pieces for consideration into the revered publication. This year I sent in 15, I think, and luckily two of those pieces made it in.
True, I've been fortunate enough to have a piece or two of my work accepted yearly for the the last 6 years or so, with a gap year that my work wasn't chosen.
It's always hard NOT to be chosen. No bones about it. Alternately yeah, it feels really great to have my work accepted, when it is. I feel like it's a pretty sweet vindication of how hard I've worked at my craft.
Still, year after year, I can never predict if I'll get in or if I won't, and if so, which of the 15 or so pieces I sent made it.
Here's my work that was included in Spectrum 19.

The first one is art for Magic the Gathering Planechase

Concepts for Phosphor Games

So I realized I haven't made a post since August 2011!  I know, that is lame...It was certainly not out of laziness, I just forgot...I know, that's also lame. Water under the bridge now. :\
Here are a few pieces I have done over the past year, there is too many to post them all. I want to put up pieces that people don't really get to see for what ever reason.

There is much more work I'd like to publish here but its getting late...more to come

MK9 Concepts & MK Redesigns

It's been a long time since I posted and the MK fans out there have been asking to see some of the concept art that I did for MK9.
I was only asked to do a few and with some very specific direction, but I also took the liberty of presenting a few concepts more to suit my own taste, hoping they would want to take the game in that direction. My redesigns.
The first three concepts I did (Reptile, Johnny Cage and Cryax), I had no interaction with the team and are the ones in which I branched out on my own.
I had just rolled off of another project and moved right to MK9 and these were the first pieces I showed to the guys. The first version of Cryax had a face that Ed Boon pointed out to look like Howard the Duck (he was right it did have the shape of Howard the Duck) so I changed that, but that was all I changed.

The next three I did (Milena, Sub Zero & Nightwolf) were directed by the team to look like what they did in MK2. I think they all turned out pretty good, but I was a little disappointed with what I did with Sub-Zero, he was always my fav of the MK characters and I think I could have iterated on him a few more times.
These were the last images I did for Midway Games before I left. I do have a bunch of earlier concepts from different MK pitches that have never seen the light of day. I will post them when the time is right I suppose...
